Twin Hills Village RO Plant Upgrade

  • Client: Newmont
  • Location: Tanami Desert, Northern Territory
  • Date: 2025

Project Overview and Scope

Newmont Gold’s Tanami operations are located in the Tanami Desert in the Northern Territory. The Twin Hills Village Water Treatment Plant supports critical village and site water treatment requirements.

The existing Reverse Osmosis units had been operating since 2000, with RO2 and RO5 becoming increasingly difficult to maintain due to age, wear and deterioration. The control panels also no longer met Newmont’s current standards for wiring, PLC hardware, switchgear and control system configuration.

The project objective was to decommission the existing RO units and replace them with new, upgraded units suitable for the area’s expected water treatment demand.

EMtek was engaged to provide multidisciplinary engineering design and detailing for the new RO plant, covering:

  • Civil and structural design
  • Mechanical and piping design
  • Electrical engineering
  • Instrumentation and controls
  • Site assessment and tie-in identification
  • 3D model development
  • Design review and HAZOP support
  • Engineering reporting and documentation

Services and Outcome

EMtek delivered a coordinated design package to support the replacement of the ageing RO infrastructure and integration of the new plant into the existing water treatment system.

Key services included:

  • Project management, coordination and document control
  • Site inspection to confirm existing conditions and tie-in points
  • Concrete slab and trenchwork design
  • Hydraulic assessment of the existing RO feed pump
  • Piping, valve and fitting design for new plant connections
  • Booster pump design and selection, if required
  • P&ID, site GA and pipeline layout drawings
  • Electrical design and power supply interfaces
  • Switchboard review, cable calculations and protection settings
  • Instrumentation, PLC I/O and controls philosophy
  • Fibre optic communication interface to the existing switchroom control system
  • Lighting review and design, where required
  • 3D Navisworks model, design report and HAZOP documentation

The completed design package provided Newmont with a practical pathway to replace ageing RO assets with upgraded infrastructure aligned to current site standards, operational requirements and long-term maintainability.
