Project Scope

EMtek was proud to support Rio Tinto in their operations at Pilbara for the complex project scope at the Marandoo Iron Ore Mine in 2020. Changes were required to the conveyor transfers at Marandoo Iron Ore Mine Site to increase throughputs and belt speed. Potential improvements were recommended by EMtek after completing an investigation into the material flow through the chutes. Whilst the review was focused on addressing the effects of increasing belt speeds and throughput, other chute performance issues were also highlighted throughout the investigation. The higher conveyor belt wear on the receiving conveyors was a significant issue found by the EMtek team. Our concept offered improvements to the forward velocity of ore and reduced boiling of material resulted in reducing belt wear. The reduction in shear resulted in an increase in conveyor belt life.

Major Work Inclusions

  • DEM of all chutes.
  • Design and shop detailing of new upper ledge to accommodate change in ore trajectory.
  • Design new bolt in ledges for a widened outlet.
  • Design of kicker for improved material flow onto belt.
  • Site works drawing to detail modification including removal of lower rock box.
  • New spillage cover system between lower chute and skirts.
  • Considerations for ease of maintenance for installation and removal of components.
  • Site works drawing to include removal of rock box above boot.
